چکیده

For the majority of the developed world, the hunter–gatherer lifestyle that served our predecessors for millennia is a distant memory. yet, despite our increasingly sophisticated approach to food as top chefs compete for Michelin stars, our basic ability to taste chemical signatures and perceive flavour has not changed. in fact, in addition to sight, the ability to taste might have been one of our ancestors’ most important senses, and one under strong selective pressure. From the taste and texture of a food we are able to discern much about whether it will be healthy or harmful for us, and this probably meant the difference between life and death for our predecessors. thus, our ability to taste is a function of survival and might explain much about the otherwise-strange things that humans find palatable today.

Magnetic and Temperature-Sensitive Composite Polymer Particles and Adsorption Behavior of Emulsifiers and Trypsin

A combination of magnetic and temperature-responsive properties in the same polymer composites is expected to increase their potential applications in the biomedical field. Accordingly, micron-sized magnetite/polystyrene/poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate-ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate), which are abbreviated as Fe 3 O 4 /PS/P (DM-EGDM) composite polymer particles, were prepared by the seede...

IGF-I attenuates diabetes-induced cardiac contractile dysfunction in ventricular myocytes.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy is characterized by impaired ventricular contraction and altered function of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), a key factor for cardiac growth and function. Endogenous IGF-I has been shown to alleviate diabetic cardiomyopathy. This study was designed to evaluate exogenous IGF-I treatment on the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy. Adult rats were divided into four...

Perspective in Taste Predicates and Epistemic Modals

What if any role is played by perspective—whom the licorice is tasty to, whose evidence allows for licorice in the cupboard—in the semantics of such sentences? I will argue that taste predicates like “tasty” and “fun” project syntactically real experiencer arguments, which specify the perspective at issue. Thus 1 basically means [licorice is tasty to——], with the blank filled in by the speech c...

Progenitors in Peripheral Nerves Launch Heterotopic Ossification

Studies presented here, using a murine model of bone morphogenetic protein type 2 (BMP2)-induced heterotopic ossification (HO) show that the protein initiates HO by signaling through progenitors in the endoneurium of peripheral nerves. In the mouse, these cells were identified in the endoneurium one day after BMP2 induction using antibody against phosphoSMAD (PS) 1, 5, and 8. Studies conducted ...
